Helping Hand – கரம் கொடுப்போம் – is Southend Tamil Association’s welfare project. Through it our members and well-wishers give practical help to people in need, here in Southend and back home in Sri Lanka, and the Association makes sure every gift reaches the right hands.
Many of us like to mark a birthday, a wedding anniversary or a child’s first birthday by doing something good – but don’t know whom to ask, or how to be sure the help arrives. That is what Helping Hand is for. Tell us the occasion and what you would like to give – dry rations for a family, milk powder for young children, a bicycle or school bags for a student, a hot meal for people who are struggling – and our volunteers arrange it on your behalf through people we trust, and send you the photos.
Helping Hand is run entirely by volunteers of Southend Tamil Association, a registered charity (CIO 1189156).
What we have done together · நாம் இணைந்து செய்தவை
- May 2020 – in the first lockdown our volunteers cooked and delivered hot meals to Southend’s homeless and to hospital staff.
- 2020 – treats and supplies for the nurses and staff of Southend Hospital, reported in the Southend Echo.
- 2020 – dry rations for families in Sri Lanka whose income stopped during the Covid-19 lockdown.
- June 2022 – milk powder for the children of 85 families in Sri Lanka, given by a well-wisher of the Association.
- 1 June 2022 – five students, two from Adiyal Nagar, Santhapuram in the Vanni and three from Jaffna Muthuthambi Maha Vidyalayam, received new bicycles – a birthday gift from our member Mr Muthusamy Uthayaranjith.
- School bags for schoolchildren in Sri Lanka.
